What part of the report made you think I was, if I may ask? As you note, I was looking for common denominators, but outside of the expected loci I didn't find them in any unusual number. In fact, I often didn't find them as obvious where I might have expected them (same wine, different vintages).

I do like to make both sides of an argument, yes, but usually my purpose in doing so is to preemptively deal with the obvious objections, because I do (usually) have a position. Of course, this is why my posts get to be so long...

As for palomino and its potential deficiencies, I have no idea. When all the potential candidates for quality have actually been assessed and have still been found wanting, I tend to think it can be ascribed to insufficient ambition to make matters otherwise. I haven't tasted nearly enough non-flor palomino to have an opinion on that, however.thor iversonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16189098900228936573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19631515.post-74225799806918361882010-08-24T16:06:38.270-04:002010-08-24T16:06:38.270-04:00Okay, you're looking for common traits, I get ...Okay, you're looking for common traits, I get it. But are you also arguing lack of distinction? Can't necessarily say I can tell a hawk from a handsaw, but I seem to recall that the differences between, say, the Hidalgo La Gitana Manzanilla and the Domaine de Montbourgeau Savagnin L'Etoile are somewhat obvious. (I reserve the right to be confused. You appear to have fully mastered the art of making both sides of an argument...)

Anyway, once again a marvelous experience, marvelously related, and thanks, I'm a Better Person for having read this.

And an idle question: How is it, do you suppose, that Palomino is successful in the presence of flor, but so listless when it is Listán?The Wine Mulehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13056199373110048787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19631515.post-62745213884525250652010-08-19T12:07:44.247-04:002010-08-19T12:07:44.247-04:00Worse, I only bought two of the wines and crash-te...Worse, I only bought two of the wines and crash-tested none of them. I'll try harder next time.

As for the scores, I have a feeling everything will taste just a little bit better next month. And the month after that. To be honest, I think I need a new scale, because this one fails each and every year, around November or so.thor iversonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16189098900228936573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19631515.post-13619568755041324832010-08-19T04:45:39.338-04:002010-08-19T04:45:39.338-04:00Thor,

Not that I read consumer reports or wish to compare your superior reviews of wines to their reviews of, say, electronics.

Some personal favorites here would include the Mendall Arrencades, the La Bota no. 10, and the Valdespino Ynocente.

Does the preponderance of 8/10 scores indicate some sort of bias against the 10 point scoring system?

Thanks for the write-up.Joe Manekinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15920171629129831900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19631515.post-85428584429796798172010-08-12T11:19:42.787-04:002010-08-12T11:19:42.787-04:00You're welcome. Though since one guy -- unfortunately not Levi (and not me, either) -- monologued from the moment he walked into the restaurant to the moment we got up from the table, I'm not sure we would have gotten to say more than hello.thor iversonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16189098900228936573noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19631515.post-56283145681270430512010-08-12T10:38:30.018-04:002010-08-12T10:38:30.018-04:00thank you, god thank you for the write up. so sad ...thank you, god thank you for the write up. so sad i had to miss this... my first missed levifest!Scott Reinerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14009533038751216766noreply@blogger.com
